To enter Kindergarten, a child must be four years old by December 31st of the academic year that they start.
Our School offers both Elementary and Secondary programs.
Elementary: Kindergarten to Grade 8 (ages 4 – 13)
Secondary: Grades 9 to 12 (ages 14 – 19)
Maple Leaf International School is an Ontario Curriculum school, and as such, is expected to comply with the regulations set forth by the Ontario Ministry of Education. The School undergoes a rigorous inspection annually by the Ontario Ministry of Education. More information on the curriculum can be found on the Ministry’s website https://www.dcp.edu.gov.on.ca/en/.
While learning the Ontario curriculum, students also learn parallel topics pertaining to Trinidad & Tobago. The Ontario curriculum is designed to develop students to be critical thinkers and have a global perspective.
The school year is divided into three terms for Elementary grades (Kindergarten to Grade 8).
Term 1: September to December. Term 2: January to March. Term 3: April – June.
The school year is divided into two semesters for Secondary grades (Grades 9 to 12).
Semester 1 – September to January. Semester 2 – February to June.
Secondary students typically take four courses each semester.
The School does not offer a special education program.
Textbooks are provided by the School and are to be returned in the same/good condition at the end of each year/semester. Textbooks do not drive the programs – Ontario Ministry of Education course guidelines do.
Students in Grades 5 to 12 are required to bring their own personal laptop to school each day.
Elementary students receive three reports during the academic year, one progress report and two formal reports.
Kindergarten students will receive same but the format is different.
Secondary students receive four reports, one midterm and one final report each semester.
Students at Maple Leaf do not sit the SEA or CXC examinations. In Secondary school, a student’s final grade is calculated based on 70% term work and 30% final exam or culminating activity/project. Students transition seamlessly from Elementary school (Grade 8) to Secondary school (Grade 9).
A Maple Leaf graduate receives an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). This diploma is awarded for earning 30 credits, 18 compulsory and 12 elective credits and having successfully passed the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), and completing a minimum of 40 hours of community service.
The Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) is recognised and accepted by colleges and universities worldwide.
A full-time Guidance Counsellor serves a key role in the social, emotional and academic development of our students in Grades 7 through 12. A program and career pathways plan begins in the 8th Grade using software called Unifrog. In Secondary school, students receive one-on-one guidance support in selecting courses and also with university and college applications.
