Secondary Schools United Nations Symposium (SSUNS), McGill University
Since its modest beginnings, SSUNS has grown exponentially in the last 22 years to become the largest Model United Nations conference in Canada. In 2007, SSUNS welcomed its first international delegation from outside North America and is now attended by over 1000 delegates coming from all parts of the globe.
The Maple Leaf International School Model United Nations club recently returned from Montreal, Canada, where they participated in the Symposium, hosted by students from McGill University. Nine of our students represented the country of South Africa in a variety of United Nations committees including Disarmament and International Security, the Commonwealth Head’s of Government and the International Civil Aviation Organization. Students used skills in diplomacy and debate to solve some of our world’s largest tasks. A big congratulations goes out grade 11 student Jordan Thomson for winning the Lester B. Pearson Award for Peacemaking.
While in Montreal students also had the chance to explore the local culture through ice skating, walking through the old town and eating Montreal Smoked meat.
